What Is a Certificate of Insurance (COI), and How Do You Get One?

September 5, 2026 · Florida's independent agency since 1966

If you run a business in Florida, sooner or later a client or general contractor asks for a "certificate of insurance." Here is what it is and why it can decide whether you get the job.

What a COI is

A one-page summary, usually an ACORD form, that proves you carry coverage — general liability, workers' comp, commercial auto — listing the carriers, limits, and policy dates. Your agent issues it. It is proof of coverage, not the policy itself.

What "additional insured" means

A client or GC often wants to be named as an additional insured, which extends your liability policy to cover them for claims arising out of your work. That usually requires an endorsement to your policy, not just a line on the certificate.

Why it can win or lose the job

No certificate, no work. Most GCs and municipalities won't let you on site without one, and they often need you to add them as additional insured with a waiver of subrogation. Delays here cost jobs.

How fast can you get one

Once your policy is bound, a good independent agent issues certificates and additional-insured endorsements quickly, often the same day. It's a routine part of keeping contractors working.
