Are Florida Home Insurance Rates Going Down in 2026?

September 3, 2026 · Florida's independent agency since 1966

After several brutal years of double-digit increases, 2026 is the first year in a long time that many Florida homeowners are opening their renewal to lower numbers. It is a real shift, but it is not automatic, and not every home benefits equally. Here is what changed and how to make sure your policy reflects it.

What is happening to rates in 2026

For the first time since 2018, Florida is seeing widespread single-digit and even negative rate filings. Citizens Property Insurance had an average statewide decrease of roughly 8.8% approved, and the majority of counties are seeing reductions, with some of the steepest drops in South Florida where rates had climbed the most.

Why rates are finally easing

What it means for you

Relief is not handed to you, you have to go get it. If you were placed with a high-priced carrier during the crisis, moved to Citizens, or have simply been auto-renewing, there is a real chance you are overpaying at today's rates. This is the year to re-shop. A newer roof and wind mitigation credits matter more than ever now that more carriers are competing for your business.

The catch

Falling is not the same as cheap. Coastal and older homes still pay the most, and roof age and claims history still decide who will write you. If your home was recently non-renewed, the improving market is genuinely good news, because there are more options than there were a year ago.

Frequently asked questions

Are Florida home insurance rates going down for everyone?

No. The trend is positive statewide, but coastal and higher-risk homes still pay more, and your roof age and claims history affect what you're offered.

Will my rate drop automatically at renewal?

Not necessarily. Some carriers are filing decreases, but the surest way to capture savings is to re-shop your policy across multiple carriers at renewal.

Should I switch carriers to get a lower rate?

Often it's worth comparing. As an independent agency we shop 150+ carriers at once, so you can see whether a switch actually saves you money without the legwork.
